Is Kenya’s Artistic Freedom on Trial?

PANAF has launched  research in Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, The Gambia, and Zambia. This research will provide an overview of Artistic freedom in the eight focus countries. This assignment is expected to give clear insight on the status of freedom of artistic expression and come up with a workable recommendation that will help artists, audiences and advocates defend their specific artistic rights to free expression and guide government and other stakeholders in better promoting and protecting them. The recommendations will also guide training and lobbying efforts in 2023.

“The research will be conducted to determine the true picture and the difficulties that creative artists frequently confront while expressing their artistic ideas,” Selam’s regional programme director Lucy ilado said.

“As a result, regulations, guidelines, and modules governing creative material in various government agencies will be thoroughly evaluated. This exercise will take four months after which we shall propose possible recommendations and commence training and lobby activities.”
