Mozambican Women Address Challenges and Opportunities in the CCIs

On June 24th, Panaf’s partner, the Mozambican Federation of Creative and Cultural Industries (FEMICC), held a round table of women in the Culture and Creative Industries (CCIs). Through this gathering, FEMICC sought to understand the status of women in the sector, as well as their needs, challenges, and solutions; explore how gender influences opportunities; and discuss ways to improve the sector.

Participants discussed opportunities for funding, economic access, the instability of the sector, and gender-based discrimination in the creative sector.

Some highlights of this round table include the acknowledgment of the importance of safe spaces where women can discuss their realities, trusting that their experiences will be respected. Participants also expressed the relevance of including men in these gender-based round tables in the future so that, as partners in the sector, they can hear women’s experiences and promote solutions side by side.

Participants recommended holding monthly round tables and requested that FEMICC assist in creating functional networks to promote collaboration. They also recommended the creation of institutions for research and the transformation of raw materials in the crafts, textile, and visual arts sectors.

Finally, participants showed great interest in joining actions to create a legal framework that would improve the sector, such as the statute of the artist, copyrights, and allocating 1% of the public budget for culture.
