We are thrilled to announce that the second edition of the Pan-African Network for Artistic Freedom (PANAF) Summit will commence this Friday, February 14, 2025, in Zanzibar. Organized by Selam in partnership with the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC), and supported by the Swedish Arts Council and the Swedish Institute, this year’s summit is themed “Art, Civic Engagement, and Movement Building.” The event underscores the critical role of art in driving social movements across the African continent. We look forward to engaging days of dialogue and collaboration among artists, cultural producers, policymakers, and human rights advocates to advance artistic freedom throughout Africa.
Over the course of three days, participants will engage with a keynote speech, panel discussions, artistic performances, and group discussions. Key topics include strategies for regional artistic solidarity, the impact of digital media and technology on artistic freedom, and the role of governments and international bodies in supporting creative expression. The summit will also focus on developing actionable commitments to protect and promote the rights of artists operating in diverse and complex cultural environments.
Reflecting on the summit’s significance, Selam’s founder and executive director, Teshome Wondimu, stated, “The Summit stands as a platform for the exchange of ideas, fostering collaboration, and collectively advancing the cause of artistic freedom in Africa and beyond” Echoing this sentiment, Julie Trebault, Director of ARC, remarked, “This Summit is more than a venue for conversation—it is a platform for action. Together, we will explore the nuanced realities of artistic freedom across the African continent.”
